This is a serious incident that took place few years back that scared my so much that I feel the need to always share.
We were doing a base maintenance check on a A320. The workplace was organised, the culture was strong and the people were friendly and enjoyed performing the daily tasks.
The incident took place during the landing gear check procedure. Due to miscommunication between the engineer inside the forward landing gear bay and the engineer in the flight deck, the gears were operated whilst the first engineering was still inside the wheel bay.
The aeroplane system logic had to complete the full cycle before allowing us to lower the gear again and I have to say that those minutes it took the gear to cycle, were terrifying. I still remember that I was only screaming not even sure if I was making any sense. When the gears were lowered again all we expected was a severely injured person. But thanks God, this guy was small and flexible, and he managed to crawl up inside the bay and avoided any contact with the gear structure. We couldn’t believe in our luck! It was really an incident I don’t want anyone experience.
The company was quick reacting in placing a second confirmation prior to operation of gears, to make sure something like this will never happen again.
